Platform area maintenance
The platform areas at railway stations are kept in such a condition that they signal comfort and safety. Particular attention shall be paid to defects or conditions that risk the safety of passengers.
What does platform area maintenance mean in practice?
Platform area maintenance includes snow removal, waste collection and green area maintenance. Scheduled passenger traffic and passenger safety are taken into account in the timing of platform area maintenance work. For safety reasons, snow removal must not be carried out by heavier machines while trains are running. In busy stations, this leaves a window of a few hours in the nighttime.
In southern Finland, the platform area maintenance contractors are RTH and Infraroad and in other areas, platform areas are maintained by the railway maintenance operators. Between North Haaga, Vantaankoski and Leinelä, the City is responsible for the stations, with the exception of the airport, which belongs to the responsibility of the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency.
Multiple parties responsible
There are several parties responsible for the maintenance of the station building, walkways leading to the station and platforms. The platform areas are the responsibility of the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency, the station building is the responsibility of either VR or the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency, and the walkways are the responsibility of either the municipality or the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency.
