The 1,700 m long canal was built in 1876-79, and renewed in 1956-59. Drive into the lock under the rising gate, its clearance is 10.5 m. Timber floating lock, contact the operating personnel when you approach during timber floating to get instructions on a safe waiting point. When coming down, boats can wait for their turn in the direction of travel above the lock in the waiting pier on the left. Timber is floated along the right edge of the fairway.
Boaters cannot use the waiting pier at the bottom harbour because timber bundles drop from the lock next to this pier. Waiting on the left side next to the power plant is also not possible due to the high flow. The only option is to wait further in the direction of travel on the right side of the fairway.
Use of the canal is controlled by the Joensuu Canal remote control centre. VHF calls on channel 11 (or 16), Kaltimo Canal. If your vessel does not have communication equipment, the locking request is made by pulling on the cords at the lock’s top and lower canal ends, located to the left in the direction of travel. Kaltimo Canal is in use during the opening hours of the Joensuu Canal Remote Control Centre. Instructions and opening hours are available on the information board.
