On the Nilsiä route, the draught from Kallavesi to Karhovesi is 2.4 m, from Karhovesi to Karjalankoski, the draught above Juankoski's Lock is 1.8 m. From Juankoski via Lastukoski Lock, to Nilsiä and Tahkovuori the draught is 1.5 m. Clearance is 8 m below Lastukoski Lock. The fixed bridge above Lastukoski Canal has a clearance of 4.3 m.
The canal is located in the centre of the city of Juankoski next to a power plant, and it was completed in summer 2002. The clearance for the fixed bridge that crosses the canal is 8.0 metres.
Be careful of currents caused by the power plant above and below the lock.
Self-service lock. When approaching from below, the self-service starter cord and the instructions for its use are located on the lower canal’s pier on the right. If the power plant is running, there is a strong current at the self-service starter cord, which pushes the boat away from the pier. In this case, it may be best to drive the boat past the starter cord in the direction of the lock and approach the starter cord on foot.
