About Digiroad

Digiroad is the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency's national open data information system. It contains the centre line geometry and key characteristics of the entire Finnish road and street network. Digiroad offers a free and unified description of the transport network in a digital format.

Digiroad was introduced in 2004. Today, it enables, for example, the development and productisation of various route planning, navigation, tourism and traffic telematics services.

The Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency is responsible for the Digiroad information service. Municipalities, private road municipalities and ELY Centres (Centres for Economic Development) are responsible for maintaining the data in cooperation with the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency.

Legal Data

Digiroad's operations are based on the Act on the Road and Street Network Information System and the Government Decree on Characteristics Data Stored in the Road and Street Network Information System (997/2003).

The Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency owns the Digiroad information system and is responsible for its operation, development and disclosure of data by decision of the Ministry of Transport and Communications. The Digiroad operator acts as the main user of the system, maintains the material and supports various parties in Digiroad activities. The operator service is currently handled by CGI Suomi Oy.

Responsibilities for maintaining the data

The responsibility for maintaining the data contained in Digiroad has been divided so that Digiroad would have the best and most up-to-date information on the road and street network. Organisations maintaining the data are the National Land Survey of Finland, the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency, municipalities and TVVs (competent authority, e.g., the National Land Survey of Finland). HSL and Föli). In addition, since the beginning of 2019, private road municipalities have reported data on private roads. (You can read more detailed responsibilities on the front page of material maintenance. (Under construction))

The Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency owns and distributes open Digiroad material for everyone to use

The use of Digiroad material must comply with the terms and conditions of the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license.

Digiroad content

Digiroad contains the centre line geometry and feature information of roads and streets. It’s the most comprehensive free database describing Finland's road network. It provides its users with, for example, information on the centre line geometry, name and number, address number, speed limit, various restrictions and prohibitions, traffic lights and public transport stops.

In addition, the data also covers road width, pavement, lighting and traffic volume data. Bridge and tunnel data are also part of the data. The data covers the entire road network in Finland, including, for example, walking and cycling routes as well as private roads.

The centre line geometry of the carriageway includes roads, separate walking and cycling lanes, driving paths, and ferry and cable ferry connections. In Digiroad, the centreline geometry of the carriageway is stored on the road link. Digiroad's traffic-related feature data, on the other hand, includes the characteristics of the road link, the line-like data types of the road and street network, such as speed limits and access restrictions. Point data types include, for example: road signs and service points. In Digiroad, geometry is based on the National Land Survey's topographic database data.
