Work on the Espoo Rail Line will cause interruptions in rail traffic on the coastal line also this year

Published 2.4.2026

As in last year, train service interruptions will be organised in spring, summer and autumn. The interruptions will affect both commuter trains in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area and long-distance trains between Helsinki and Turku. The first interruptions will take place in May, and a five-week train service interruption will begin after Midsummer. Tuomarila station will be closed to passengers from the beginning of the summer interruption until the end of the interruptions in the autumn. The Tunnelitie road in Kauniainen, which was closed during previous summers, will remain open during the service interruptions.

During the interruptions this year, construction will be carried out in the entire project area from Leppävaara to Kauklahti for the first time, as work has also been started in the westernmost area contract (area contract 4) between Espoon keskus and Kauklahti.

Train service interruptions are necessary for the progress of the project, as the majority of the work will be carried out on the structures under the tracks. During the train service interruptions, the focus is on building the station areas. After the summer interruption, the station areas of Kilo, Kera, Kauniainen and Koivuhovi will largely be ready.

“During this year’s service interruptions, we will again do a huge amount of construction work that has required careful planning. At the end of the summer interruption, we will already be close to the final situation in many areas,” says Project Manager Tommi Rosenvall from the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency.

The first four 24-hour train service interruptions will be organised in May. The 5-week interruption will begin on the Monday following Midsummer, and two more 24-hour interruptions and three 48-hour interruptions will be organised during September and October.

Tuomarila station will be closed from the beginning of the summer interruption until early October

Major changes will be made in connection with the summer interruption at Tuomarila in Espoo. The existing side platforms will be dismantled and a new intermediate platform as well as a staircase and lift connections to the new platform will be built at the station. Tuomarila station will be closed at the beginning of the summer interruption on 22 June and reopened after the last train service interruption in the autumn, on the first Monday of October (5 October). After the summer interruption, trains will pass Tuomarila station along the new northern tracks without stopping until the last service interruption in the autumn.

The Tunnelitie road in Kauniainen, which was closed during the two previous summers, will remain open during the interruptions this year. Lane arrangements are possible, however.

“Substantial renewal work will be done in the Tuomarila station area, and the station must be closed to ensure that work can progress safely. Construction in the station area in Kauniainen, on the other hand, is already well under way and only some finishing work will be required after the summer service interruption,” says Rosenvall.

Buses for passengers during the interruptions

At the same time, work related to the rail traffic arrangements of the Espoo Rail Line project will also be carried out on stations, bridges and tracks on other projects and track maintenance as well: the Ring Rail Line, the Leppävaara Rail Line and on the coastal line west of Kauklahti.

For more information on exceptional arrangements during the service interruptions, see the VR and HSL websites.

When completed, the rail line will enable more frequent train services between Leppävaara and Kauklahti. Two additional tracks will improve the punctuality of commuter and long-distance traffic on the coastal line and significantly reduce susceptibility to disruptions.
