In the Finnish road network, there are about 500 monitoring stations that automatically collect road transport data. Loops embedded into the road pavement monitor the passing vehicle's driving direction, lane used, driving speed and vehicle length. Based on these results, vehicles are categorised into seven groups. The data collected at these monitoring stations is now openly available.
"This monitoring data is the most extensive, single dataset opened up by the Finnish Transport Agency. It comprises over 2.5 million separate CSV files", says Tomi Lapinlampi, Open Data Specialist at the Finnish Transport Agency.
Lapinlampi adds that the dataset is constantly growing and updated, as new monitoring data becomes available at the end of each day. The data license used is Creative Commons Attribution 4.0.
