On the Nilsiä route, the draught from Kallavesi to Karhovesi is 2.4 m, from Karhovesi to Karjalankoski, the draught above Juankoski's Lock is 1.8 m. From Juankoski via Lastukoski Lock, to Nilsiä and Tahkovuori the draught is 1.5 m. Clearance is 8 m below Lastukoski Lock. The bridge above Lastukoski Canal has a clearance of 4.3 m.
The canal is located in the centre of the city of Juankoski next to industrial plants, and it was completed in summer 2002. The clearance for the fixed bridges (3) across the canal’s blasted riverbed is 8 m.
Avoid currents caused by the power plant both above and below the canal. These may be strong above the canal.
Self-service lock. When approaching from below, there is a set of traffic lights, a waiting pier and instructions at the end of lower canal before the pipe bridge, on the right. The actual self-service starter cord, instructions and waiting pier are located on the right near the pedestrian and bicycle bridge. When approaching from above, the self-service starter cord, instructions and waiting pier have been on the left in a spot shielded from currents from the beginning of 2006. Previously, the pier was located on the opposite side, where the current caused by the power plant caused problems for boaters.
