The traffic season in the Saimaa Canal to end on 31 January 2022

Published 27.1.2022 15.34

The Saimaa Canal will close at the end of January. The last ship will be Widor, which an icebreaker will escort out of the canal.

During the icebreaking season, water traffic in Saimaa was assisted by the tug boat Calypso and the detachable icebreaking bow Saimaa as well as the icebreakers Protector and Meteor.

Winter came quickly to Saimaa. The icebreakers were needed from the beginning of December. The traffic interruption is likely to continue until the end of March, until the weather conditions allow the opening of the canal.

No major maintenance work is to be carried out on the Saimaa Canal this winter.

The traffic volumes in the Saimaa Canal increased by approximately 4% in 2021 compared to the previous year.
