The canal connects Lakes Nerkojoki and Onkivesi. The 1,770 metre canal was built in 1866-69, and renewed in 1981-83. The clearance of the swing bridge that crosses the canal is 2.3 m.

It is possible to pass through the canal using self-service if bridge opening is not required. When approaching from below, the self-service starting rope and instructions are on the dock at the lower canal on the left, and when approaching from above, on the dock at the upper canal near the bridge, on the right. Operating instructions and opening hours are posted on the notice board.

In the event of a disruption, you can contact the operating personnel by telephone or by means of an alarm switch in the lock. A timber floating canal, where boats cannot fit in the lock at the same time as floating timber. If necessary, fasten your boat to the piers at the ends of the canal.

Please note: At times water is run through the canal for the regulation of water levels, which causes a dangerously high flow in the canal. A red flashing light signal is used to warn canal users of higher water flow, and the upper waterways are blocked from use with a floating beam. If you enter the canal during the run-out, carefully fasten your vessel to the waiting pier and contact the operating personnel.
