Upswing in maritime transport 2016 – boost especially in export transports

Last year, there was an upswing in both export and import transports in international seaborne trade. Export transports increased by 8.3 per cent and import transports by 4.5 per cent. There was also an increase in the number of passengers in international seaborne transport.

In 2016, the volume of goods transported in international seaborne trade amounted to 94.9 million tonnes. Exports accounted for 48.4 million tonnes, and imports for 46.5 million tonnes.

Regarding exports, there was an increase especially in the transport volumes of ores, oil products, pulp, sawn timber and chemical industry products. There was a decline in the transport volumes of crude minerals and fertilisers. Regarding imports, there was an increase in the transport volumes of crude oil, coal and metals, whereas the transport volumes of ores, crude minerals and chemical industry products decreased compared to the respective volumes in 2015.

Pertaining to transit traffic through Finnish ports, exports grew by 4.2 per cent and imports declined by 4.1 per cent. The volumes transported in transit traffic totalled 6.6 million tonnes, a decline of 3.1 per cent from 2015.

In 2016, the number of vessels arriving in Finnish ports totalled just over 30,500, an increase of 0.7 per cent compared to the previous year. The share of Finnish vessels, about 10,200, remained at almost the same level.

The number of passengers in international seaborne trade amounted to 18.9 million, i.e. 1.7 per cent more than the previous year. The number of maritime passengers travelling to and from Sweden was 8.84 million, which accounts for 46.9 per cent of the total international maritime passenger transport. The number of passengers travelling by sea to and from Estonia was 8.76 million, accounting for 46.4 per cent of the total.
