Traffic volumes on main roads continue to increase

Published 18.8.2017

The total traffic volumes on main roads for the period of January-June this year increased by about 2.3 per cent compared to the corresponding period of the previous year. There was an especially noteworthy increase, 3.4 per cent, in the amount of heavy-duty vehicles (lorries and buses).

On the main roads, the traffic volumes of cars and vans increased by about 2 per cent. There were no significant variations between the different regions. The greatest increases, about 2.5 per cent, were seen in Pirkanmaa and Central Finland. In Southeast Finland and North Ostrobothnia, the increases were nearly one per cent.

In heavy-duty traffic, the regional differences were more significant than in car and van traffic. Southwest Finland saw the greatest increase, as heavy-duty traffic there increased by no less than 5.7 per cent. In Pirkanmaa, the growth reached 4.4 per cent, and in North Ostrobothnia, 4.3 per cent. In South Ostrobothnia, heavy-duty traffic increased by barely one per cent.

Traffic volumes are measured by an automatic traffic monitoring system (TMS).
