Published 31.12.2018

The transport administration reforms take effect today on 1 January 2019. The Finnish Transport Agency is now the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency (in Finnish, Väylä).

The Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency focuses on planning, developing and maintaining the network of roads, railways and waterways. We are also responsible for coordinating transport and land use and for organising traffic control and winter navigation.

Responsibility for over 20 billion euros worth of transport infrastructure assets

Mr Kari Wihlman continues as the Director General of the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency. The agency employs 400 experts and indirectly over 12,000 people through investment projects, planning and maintenance. The agency's annual budget is 2 billion euros and we are responsible for transport infrastructure assets amounting to over 20 billion euro.

Collaboration on customer service

The Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency is collaborating closely with various transport operators. Today, on 1 January 2019, the company Traffic Management Finland Group, which is responsible for the traffic management of all transport modes, begins operations. The new Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom also begins operations today. Traficom is responsible for permits, certificates and supervision, among other things. The regional Centres for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment, under the guidance of the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency, are responsible for ensuring smooth and safe transport on the public roads and for the maintenance in their respective areas.
