The share of light-duty vehicles (cars and vans) on the main roads increased by 1.7 per cent. From a regional perspective, the differences in car and van volumes were negligible. The traffic volumes increased the most in Lapland (3.3 %), and in Central Finland (2.9 %). The only slight decrease in traffic volumes (0.2 %) was shown in South-eastern Finland.
There were greater regional differences in heavy-duty transport than in light-duty transport. The most significant increase was registered in Lapland, where the share of heavy-duty vehicles increased by 4.9 per cent. In Uusimaa, there was a similar increase of 4.6 per cent. In South-eastern Finland, the share of heavy-duty vehicles showed a further decrease of about 0.6 per cent. Transport statistics in this area are highly affected by the decreasing traffic volumes across the eastern border.
Data about traffic on main roads is obtained from automatic traffic counting systems (LAM).
