Media invitation: Aurora Summit 2018 gathers top specialists on automated transport in Olos 16–17 January 2018

Published 19.12.2017

In Finland and around the world, promising steps are being taken towards intelligent transport systems. One important aspect of this phenomenon is addressing how safe automated transport can be ensured in difficult weather conditions. Developers, researchers, regulators and infrastructure constructors will gather in Olos, Finnish Lappland to monitor the testing of automated transport solutions and to tackle this and related issues.

In Olos, the specialists will examine the opportunities that automated transport offers in terms of the competitiveness of both transport infrastructure management and logistics. They will also focus on how legislation can expedite the implementation of automated transport and what new technologies the car industry, component manufacturers and application developers are bringing into the market.

We welcome all media representatives to the Aurora Summit!

“At the Aurora Summit, participants will examine from various angles how the expectations on automated driving in terms of safe and cost-effective mobility can be met in practice in winter”, says Reija Viinanen, Director of Aurora Collaboration. “Finland’s strength is that we are developing intelligent transport systems that are operational in all conditions, both on land and at sea. In Finland, automated driving is allowed on public roads. Our strong know-how and suitable test ecosystems, have enabled us to specialise in challenging conditions.”

The main themes regarding automated cars, such as safety and the preparedness of the car industry, will be presented by Volvo, Renault, Nissan, Denso and V-Traffic, among others. The automated cars, Juto (Sensible4) and Martti (VTT), will perform test drives in the area.

The themes of automated maritime transport, maritime collaboration in the arctic region, safe navigation and the objectives of maritime intelligent transport systems will be addressed by representatives from, for example, Rolls Royce, the US Navy and the European Maritime Safety Agency.

Another ongoing project in the area is Arctic Challenge, striving to find practical solutions to automated road transport and intelligent infrastructure in arctic conditions.

Media will be given the opportunity to follow the key speeches, discussions and technical demos on Tuesday, 16 January and on Wednesday, 17 January. Time for interviews has been reserved at the end of Tuesday, 16 January, between 17.30 and 18.30.

The summit venue Hotel Olos Lapland, is about 6km South of Muonio town, address: Oloshotellintie 25, Muonio
