Increased traffic volumes and fewer accidents on public roads

Published 21.6.2017

In 2016, the road traffic performance increased by about one per cent compared to 2015. Despite the increased traffic volumes on public roads, the number of personal injury accidents decreased by just over nine per cent. This information was recently published in Finnish Road Statistics 2016.

In 2016, the traffic performance of Finnish public roads was 37,775 million vehicle-kilometres. Private cars accounted for 30,416 million vehicle-kilometres, while the share of lorries, vans and buses was 7,359 million vehicle-kilometres.

Last year, the model for calculating traffic performance was revised, so that odometer readings gathered at vehicle inspections were used to gain more exact information. Due to the revised calculation model, the 2016 figures are not fully comparable with those of previous years.
